ENC vs ANC: Enhancing Transit Experience

What is the difference between ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) in environments dominated by constant low-frequency noise such as subways, airplanes and buses? First of all, ANC is more direct and effective in improving the ride experience in subways, airplanes and buses, while ENC mainly optimizes call clarity and applies to the field of voice services.

1. Core Differences

Characteristics ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation)
Target Counteracting ambient noise heard by the user (e.g., engine sounds) Suppresses background noise (e.g. wind) heard by the other party during a call
Use Case Listen to music, focus on rest Voice calls, conferencing
Type of Noise Cancellation Mainly for low-frequency continuous noise (airplanes, subways) Mainly for mid- to high-frequency bursts of noise (vocals, keyboard sounds)
Hardware Dependency Requires dedicated microphone + noise cancellation chip Dependent on headset microphone array + algorithms

2. Performance in similar scenarios on subways, airplanes and buses
Benefits of ANC: Enhance your own noise reduction experience for your own benefit
ANC significantly reduces environmental disturbances by counteracting low-frequency persistent noises such as engine roar and track vibration with inverted acoustic waves, which makes it suitable for sleeping or listening to music during a flight.
Continuous low-frequency noise is a major cause of travel fatigue, but ANC relieves auditory stress

3. Benefits of ENC: Ensuring that the other party hears a clear human voice during a call
ENC only optimizes the sound heard by the other party during a call (effectively blocking out most ambient noise), and does not help the user's own listening experience.

4. How to choose according to the scene?
a) Scenarios that prioritize ANC:

  • Need to listen to songs in an immersive way
  • Taking a break during a flight
  • Shielding from mechanical noise while commuting on the subway

Note: ANC does not completely isolate the human voice, for example, unexpected announcements or crying children can only rely on physical soundproofing.

b) Scenarios that prioritize ENC:

  • Frequent phone calls in noisy environments (e.g., customer service or teleconferencing, etc.)
  • The other party often complains that they can't hear you

Note: Multi-microphone array ENC performs better, and if it's used in the field of voice services, the Beien headset is already applicable, which is a cost-effective headset that uses ENC Dual-Mic Noise Cancellation, which is a two-microphone array that effectively shields against the vast majority of ambient noise. Of course, there are also three-microphone array (high-end call headset), four-microphone array (flagship noise-canceling headset), five-microphone array (professional-grade headset)
