Why isn't my headset mic working?

Step 1: Basic Checks

  • For 3.5mm dual-plug headphones: Green plug --> Insert into the "green" jack (audio output); Pink plug --> Insert into the "pink" jack (microphone input). Do not plug them in backwards; this is crucial.
  • If the plugs are not plugged in backwards, unplug them and then firmly plug them back in, ensuring they are fully inserted.
  • Check the plugs and cables for any visibly damaged areas.

Step 2: System Settings (The Most Crucial Step)

  • Start --> Settings --> System --> Sound
  • Set Input Device (Microphone): Below "Input," click the drop-down menu and select your headphone microphone as the default device (e.g., U17 Headset).
  • Test Microphone: At the bottom of the same page, you will see the "Test Microphone" area. When you speak into the microphone, the blue bar next to it will move. If the blue bar moves, the microphone is working! If it doesn't move, proceed to the next step.
  • Check Microphone Permissions (Especially Important!): On the same page --> Microphone Privacy Settings --> Ensure that the "Allow apps to access your microphone" option is "On." Continue scrolling down to find the software you are using (such as WeChat, Tencent Meeting, games, etc.) and make sure it also has microphone permissions.

Step 3: Software Settings

  • Sometimes, the problem isn't with the system, but with the software you're using.
  • For apps like WeChat/QQ/Tencent Meeting/Discord/games, go to the software's "Settings" or "Audio Settings."
  • In the audio settings, find the option for "Select Microphone Device" or "Voice Input Device."
  • Make sure the correct device is selected here (usually "Default Device" or "Microphone"), and not incorrectly set to "Stereo Mix" or another device.
