should i leave my usb headset connected to my desktop?

Yes, but from the perspective of device lifespan, safety, and performance, it is not recommended to leave the headphones plugged in for extended periods (such as several days or weeks).

There are three main reasons:

  1. Power supply and aging: Even after the computer is shut down, most USB ports still provide a 5V standby voltage. The headphone circuit remains powered by a small current for extended periods. Although this doesn't consume much power, it accelerates the electrolytic aging of internal components such as capacitors and chips, theoretically shortening the product's mean time between failures.
  2. Electrical risks: As a peripheral device, the headphones are directly exposed to the end of the power supply chain. In case of power grid fluctuations or lightning strikes, the risk is higher than when the headphones are unplugged.
  3. Management and interference: The system will default to the long-term plugged-in USB audio device as the preferred output, which may interfere with the automatic switching of other audio devices and cause inconvenience in scenarios such as sharing a computer during meetings.

Best practice: Unplug the headphones after using the computer every day or when not using it for extended periods. This is the safest way to extend the device's lifespan.
